Berlin Airlift

Following right after WWII, the iron curtain divided Europe into east and west sectors. The term 'iron curtain' was introduced by Winston Churchwill, a prime minister of Britain. Eastern Europe was communist, while Western Europe was capitalist. In Berlin, the division was most evident. The allied control council (France, USSR, Britain, America) each controlled one section of the city. Berlin had been economically damaged by the war, so America and Britain suggested a new currency without the consent of the Soviet. This angered the Soviet Union, so they blocked Berlin streets, railroads, and waterways. This event became known as the Berlin Blockade, the first major conflict of the Cold War.

The people of West Berlin could not obtain any supplies because of this blockade. So American had to take action to keep their peace in Berlin as well as support the people there without causing war. The only option left was to fly supplies in and drop them off without landing.

However, the operation was difficult, as flights had to be carefully planned, as to avoid any crashes. As winter came, it was even more difficult to transport supplies. The Navy and the Air Force were involved.
